Avoid this…

– Adding processes or practices to fix a problem

Try this …

Please list all processes/activities that you associate with work within your team. In a typical Scrum team, you may find practices such as:

+ sprint planning
+ planning poker
+ daily scrum
+ Jira board updates
+ backlog refinement
+ definition of done
+ Epics
+ User Stories
and many others.

Once you have compiled a list of all things necessary, review the Scrum Guide and strike out any term that is found in the guide. Now your list will have items not mentioned, even once, in the scrum guide. These terms are part of your Scrum implementation but not in the Scrum Guide.

As a team, reflect on

+ Why does the Scrum Guide omit these?
+ What would go wrong if we dropped these extras for a sprint or two or forever?

Silence in frameworks

“The Scrum framework is purposefully incomplete, only defining the parts required to implement Scrum theory. Scrum is built upon the collective intelligence of the people using it. Rather than provide people with detailed instructions, the rules of Scrum guide their relationships and interactions.” – Scrum Guide 2020

To understand the wisdom behind purposeful gaps in the Scrum Framework, read this impactful article In defense of the immutability of the Scrum Framework.

Remember you don’t have to Wagner your orchestra to make delight. Less is more.
