Introduction to Systems Thinking

Summary

“Traveler, there is no path. We make the road by walking.” We have been here before. A decade of trying to install agile frameworks has not led to the changes we hoped for. The problems from before remain trenched despite ongoing efforts to resolve them.

The Systems Thinking approach offers a way to build empathy for the people caught in the middle. Developing a nuanced understanding of the complexity surrounding most transformations will help leaders to practice curiosity and mindfulness. This talk presents an introduction to Systems Thinking and how it might aid leadership and coaching teams to approach transformations differently than attempting to enforce behavior changes by simply setting performance targets.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Recognize the building blocks of a system by analyzing organizational dynamics.
  2. Understand systems at play using three diagnostic techniques: Shape of the problem, Stocks & Flows, and Diagram to Dialogue.
  3. Differentiate between reactive, adaptive, and creative approaches to influence systemic outcomes.
